LIT Transition House is located in the northwest part of Edmonton City, Alberta Province, Canada. This transition house is a project of Life Impact Transformation Inc. (LIT), and a response to the ever-increasing housing and informational needs of minorities coming to Alberta province. The House provides newcomers with temporary accommodation and assistance in the settlement documentation process. Although LIT Transition House has limited space for an ever-growing number of those in need of emergency accommodation, we do have future plans for expansion of our facilities and services.
LIT Transition House was started by the program's directors who observed that many newcomers to Canada face the challenge of securing temporary accommodation while trying to integrate into the Canadian ecosystem. The House provides newcomers with short-term accommodation and assistance with settlement documentation.
The facility can only physically accommodate four newcomers at any given time
but is able to virtually serve an average of 80 newcomers. Typically, the newcomers are helped with settlement documentation and given information on how to access local resources. We plan to serve many more needy newcomers but our resources are currently limited and the demand is high.
Currently, LIT Transition House services are offered to newcomers from East Africa who are in need of temporary housing. However, other minority community members may be admitted on a humanitarian basis.
LIT Transition House residents are given temporary accommodation before finding their own housing in the most appropriate neighborhood of their choice while non-resident clients are served virtually.
Both residents and non-residents of LIT Transition House are supported in the preparation of
settlement documentation. They are also given information on essential services such as public
transport, Edmonton Transit Service (ETS), public library services, Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers (EMCN), pharmacies and medical providers. LIT strives to connect newcomers to their relevant cultural community and Canadian resources that may be helpful to them.
Once a newcomer is registered with LIT Transition House, he/she is assigned a social
worker who acts as a mentor to the person transitioning from newcomer to an enterprising and skilled member of the local community.
LIT plans to expand its outreach for temporary accommodation space for newcomers in partnership with a variety of stakeholders in Alberta province. This is in harmony with Alberta government strategies that aim to attract skilled and enterprising people from around the world to move to Alberta province to chart a more prosperous and stronger economy for all.
